West Ham In Danger Of Losing Out On 25 Goal Striker To Arsenal As Battle To Secure Free Transfer Takes New Twist

West Ham are now trailing Arsenal in the race to snap up Lille striker Jonathan David, according to reports in Italy.

Inter Milan are among several teams, along with the Hammers, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool, who are keen on signing the Canadian international on a free transfer.

However, InterLive.it claim that the Gunners are currently the “hottest” link, suggesting that Mikel Arteta’s side have made a recent approach to secure David’s signature.

The forward is out of contract at the end of the season and he is not expected to sign an extension to stay with Lille beyond the summer.

West Ham have dragged their heels

Just a few weeks ago, it was reported by sources close to the club that they were closing in on a deal for David. However, it was also suggested that head coach Graham Potter wasn’t particularly keen on recruiting him as he wanted a more traditional number nine.

David has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season, but he does prefer to come deep for the ball and get involved in build-up play. Holding up the ball is not one of his strengths.

However, the 25-year-old would have been an excellent addition based on his recent goal record and his availability on a free. The Irons’ hesitation on recruiting him could end up proving costly.

Are alternatives to David being considered?

West Ham have been linked with several strikers over the past couple of months. At the end of last week, there were suggestions that the club may consider a move for Tottenham’s Timo Werner, which caused consternation among some supporters.

Other names that have been mentioned included Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha, Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Tim Kleindienst.
