Former Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson named 'impactful rookie' heading into 2025 NFL season

IOWA CITY, Iowa-- Kaleb Johnson put together one of the most impressive single-seasons in Hawkeye history. His aggressiveness, patience, size and strength proved to be a lethal combination behind an improved offensive line. This past season, he posted school single-season records in points (138), total touchdowns (23) and rushing scores (21). Johnson rushed for 1,537 yards in 12 games, sixth-most in the country and third-most in program history. He also scored at least one touchdown in all 12 regular season games -- the longest stretch in school history.

Johnson entered the NFL Draft and was selected No. 83 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ohio native will look to be an immediate difference-maker on a team that has been consistent throughout the past decade, but unable to get to that next level.

ESPN's Field Yates was tasked with selecting 10non-first round players that could have a significant impact on their new teams. Johnson was selected at No. 6 overall.

"The Steelers saw Najee Harris depart in free agency this offseason, making running back a strong priority for them at some point early in the draft. Johnson had an outstanding 2024 season at Iowa, using his size, physicality and pass-game acumen to become one of FBS's best RBs. He ran for 1,537 yards and scored 23 touchdowns from scrimmage. Jaylen Warren will of course play a useful role for Pittsburgh, but offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has a well-established affinity for bigger, bruising backs like Johnson. It won't surprise me at all if he leads Pittsburgh in carries this season."

Pittsburgh was ranked No. 11 in rushing yards last season. Johnson's combination of power and patience should help him adapt well to what Mike Tomlin wants to do with his offense. Right now, Johnson's focus is learning the playbook and wants to emerge as an every-down back.

"Really explosive running back that we spent some time with on a 30 visit here," Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said. "One of the more instinctive backs that I've watched in a couple of years coming out of the draft. Perfect fit regardless of whatever run scheme you're running. He ran multiple at Iowa. Really impressive as a volume runner as the game went on, and one of the more impressive stats you've seen is the fourth quarter -- what he averaged in the fourth quarter. I believe it was over five yards per carry. Might have been closer to six."

Given Johnson's trajectory, it wouldn't be surprising to see him competing for starting snaps sometime throughout his rookie season. Harris' departure opens the door for him to make an immediate impact throughout training camp. It's possible he could become a significant part of their offense early in his career.

The Steelers are going through an interesting situation regarding the offense. Quarterback options have departed, they traded for DK Metcalf and will have ample opportunity to improve upon what they began last season. With a strong summer, Johnson could continue to put Iowa on the map in the NFL world.
