‘I’d sign that’ - Nigerian international admits he wants to join 49ers Rangers revolution

Rangers stand on the brink of history as a US consortium led by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh prepare to take charge.

Dave King admits the Rangers takeover isn’t quite there yet, with the buyout not expected to be completed until mid June.

But talks are progressing at Rangers, who haven’t waited about to appoint Kevin Thelwell as the club’s new sporting director.

With all attentions on potential Rangers manager targets, Gers fans are expecting a sizeable turnover of players in the coming months.

As for those out of contract Rangers stars, they will have to be patient as they look to find out the club’s next steps.

But for one Rangers star who is looking at an Ibrox exit, he’d give everything to be part of the US revolution in Glasgow.

Leon Balogun admits he wants new Rangers deal

Leon Balogun is in his second spell at Rangers but the big Nigerian international defender doesn’t want it to end like his first.

Balogun, who is now 36, was left heartbroken when Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson released him in the summer of 2022.

Returning under Michael Beale a year later, Balogun is desperate to extend his contract into a fifth season when all is said and done with the takeover.

”It’s exciting, it’s going to be challenging as well,” Balogun said when asked about the impending US takeover.

”Because we have a big badge to uphold and I think in recent years we’ve probably done more to lower it a little bit and we need to put it high again.

”It’s not a light badge as we all know but if I can be part of a group that kind of polishes it again and lifts it up then of course (I would like to stay).

”Because I said it last year, or maybe before I left the first time, that this has become my club now.

”I have never really supported a team diehard and like I said if I can be part of the refurbish then I’d sign that.”

‘Real Madrid might’ve called if Balogun found Rangers sooner’

Despite the fact Leon Balogun wants to stay at Rangers, the former Brighton defender is well aware that the end could be nigh.

A formidable defender who has at times struggled with injury, Balogun has been a consistent performer and role model in the blue of Rangers.

The Ibrox side are now forever in Leon’s heart and, speaking candidly, the defender only wishes he’d found Glasgow sooner.

There is catch though; had Leon joined Rangers as youngster the centre-back reckons he might’ve wound up at Real Madrid!

“I think I’ve won everything domestically if I’m not mistaken, which I’m proud of,” said Balogun.

”I hope I would be remembered as somebody who played his heart out all the time because I think that’s just how I’m built.

“Like I said proud, but also humble, because I think you also have to put things into perspective but definitely the best time of my career.

”I said it before once that I wish I would’ve been once in an environment where you are expected to win all the time a lot earlier in my career.

”I don’t know, maybe I would’ve ended up at Real Madrid, who knows. I don’t know, that’s for you to decide.

”I have really enjoyed every single second of the good times, also the bad times and yeah, it’s become family.”
