Manchester United and Chelsea have been strongly linked with Liam Delap and according to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Ipswich Town striker is believed to have chosen his next destination.
The 22-year-old has been having a stellar Premier League campaign but now that Ipswich have been relegated to the Championship, Liam Delap will be available for a bargain fee of just £30 million. This transfer fee has caught the attention of both Man United and Chelsea but as per the report, Delap will prefer a move to Old Trafford instead of Chelsea.
Will Liam Delap get any value by joining Man United?
The striker has caught everyone’s attention with 12 goals and 2 assists in 38 games this season and even though his goal return is nowhere close to the likes of Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko or Osimhen, he is the type of player who can thrive under Ruben Amorim’s guidance.
His work-rate and linkup play are unmatched and unlike Rasmus Hojlund, he can hold up the ball really well. Man United have lacked a genuine threat inside the opposition box but someone like Liam Delap can help change that with his physicality and aerial ability.
Obviously, he will have competition at Old Trafford because Man United are also working on a deal for Matheus Cunha. But, if United can get back into the Champions League next season, Delap will get plenty of gametime to prove his worth.
Can Man United make room for the 22-year-old?
Manchester United will get rid of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Joshua Zirkzee(most likely) so they will be able to make room for at least two new forwards. A move for someone like Osimhen or Gyokeres would grab a lot more attention but at £30 million, Liam Delap perfectly fits into the club’s summer budget.
They are already pursuing Cunha for £60 million and the fans won’t mind if the club shies away from the expensive centre-forwards.
Will it be a big blow for Chelsea if they miss out on Liam Delap?
At £30 million, Liam Delap will be a great bargain buy for the Blues but they won’t be heartbroken if the 22-year-old chooses Man United over them.
Chelsea won’t mind spending the big bucks and after the mixed season they have had with Nicolas Jackson, fans would love to see a prolific goalscorer lead the line. The London side are keeping tabs on strikers like Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen and Alexander Isak and if they can trim down their squad early on in the summer, Maresca will demand the signing of one of these world-class strikers.
