Former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr retires after 11-year NFL career

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Veteran quarterback Derek Carr, who suited up for the Raiders for nine of his 11 years in the NFL, is calling it a career.

Carr announced over the weekend that he will retire from football after finding that he suffered a labral tear and damage to his rotator cuff.

"It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special," he said in a statement. "Your unwavering support has meant the world to us."

The Raiders, then of Oakland, selected Carr out of Fresno State in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and he immediately became the team's starting quarterback.

He went on to appear in nearly every game for the Raiders over nine seasons with the team and became the franchise leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and pass completions.

Carr lost the starting job under Josh McDaniels in the final two weeks of the 2022 season, and the Raiders released him in the offseason.

He signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he played the last two seasons. During a Week 14 game against the New York Giants in 2024, Carr suffered a hand injury during a leap and missed the remainder of the campaign.

Carr finishes his career with a 77-92 record as a starter, four Pro Bowl nods and one postseason appearance.
