New candidate for Michigan Senate race announced

MICHIGAN (WLUC) - A former NFL player announced his campaign for Michigan Senate on Monday.

Detroit native Joe Tate announced his candidacy with a Facebook post.

Tate is a former Speaker of the Michigan House. He was the first black person to serve in the role. Before getting into politics, Tate spent two years in the NFL as an offensive lineman for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to his campaign website, Tate also served two tours in Afghanistan as a Marine Corps Officer before becoming Speaker of the House.

According to ballotpedia.org, there are three other Democratic candidates currently running against Tate.
