Arsenal’s search for a new striker in the upcoming summer transfer window has taken a major step forward, as reports from The Mirror reveal that Sporting CP are prepared to sell Swedish international Viktor Gyökeres – but only for the right price. The Portuguese club have made it clear that they will sanction the 26-year-old’s departure if Arsenal meet their £60 million valuation.
Gyökeres, who has enjoyed a sensational season in Liga Portugal, has emerged as one of Europe’s most prolific centre-forwards. His combination of physical strength, tireless work rate, and clinical finishing has made him a standout performer for Sporting, and his profile fits perfectly with what Mikel Arteta is believed to be looking for: a dynamic, powerful No. 9 capable of leading the line in the Premier League.
According to the report, Arsenal have been monitoring Gyökeres for months and view him as a serious option as they look to address one of their few remaining weak spots in the squad. While the club have operated without a consistent out-and-out striker this season, the need for a more natural goal-getter has become increasingly apparent, especially as they aim to challenge more convincingly for the Premier League title next season and make deeper runs in Europe.
Signing Gyökeres, however, won’t be cheap. Not only will Arsenal need to part with £60 million to satisfy Sporting’s demands, but they must also be prepared to make the forward one of their highest-paid players. Gyökeres is reportedly seeking a wage in excess of £200,000 per week – a figure that would place him among the top earners at the Emirates Stadium, alongside the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Martin Ødegaard.
There’s little doubt that Arsenal have the financial muscle to make such a move, especially with Champions League revenue secured for next season. However, with Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta also eyeing reinforcements in wide areas and defence – and possibly a new midfielder depending on Thomas Partey’s contract situation – the club will have to be strategic in how they allocate resources.
Still, Gyökeres’ potential arrival would be a major statement of intent. The Swedish striker has scored over 30 goals this season in all competitions and has been instrumental in Sporting CP’s domestic success. His ability to press from the front, hold up play, and score from various positions would add a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack.
While other names like Benjamin Šeško and Victor Osimhen have also been linked, Gyökeres may represent the most attainable balance of quality and value. With Sporting CP willing to do business and the player open to a Premier League move, the groundwork is now in place. Whether Arsenal pull the trigger remains to be seen – but the opportunity is there.
