49ers fans south of the border will be disappointed with NFL schedule

The 49ers aren't going to partake in an international game this season, which means no games on the docket in Mexico City.

The San Francisco 49ers dominated the Arizona Cardinals the last time head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico, beating their NFC West rivals 38-10.

Despite being the road team, technically, the crowd there was overwhelmingly pulling for the Niners instead of the red birds.

With the NFL trying to expand its footprint internationally, it wouldn't have been a shocker to see San Francisco back in Mexico City again for the 2025 season, potentially another rematch against Arizona in what'd be the third time the two franchises have faced off south of the border.

There was a chance the 49ers would visit Mexico again as part of their 2025 docket, but the league's schedule release for 2025 isn't going to include any games in the country this go-around. ESPN's Adam Schefter shared the list of international games on Tuesday, May 13, one day ahead of the official schedule release:

While there are some new international games added, including bouts in Ireland and Spain, Mexico won't host an NFL game this season.

However, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported it'd be likely the league asks the Niners to play in Mexico as part of their 2026 regular-season schedule, which wouldn't be much of a surprise whatsoever.

Additionally, San Francisco won't partake in any international games at all, meaning it won't be traveling across the Atlantic for European-hosted games either.

On the related note, the 49ers won't be the NFL's most-traveled team this year either, traveling a distance of 28,363 miles -- fifth most in the league but not the absolute most, which typically falls upon West Coast teams.
