Broncos headed back to London, this time to face the Jets

The Broncos succeeded in their last trip to London. They’ll look to make it two in a row in October.

The NFL named them as one of the teams headed outside of the United States for one of its seven international games, including three to take place in London.

Denver will face the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in Week 6 — Oct. 12 at 7:30 a.m. MDT. The game will air on NFL Network, with a local over-the-air broadcast in the Denver market on a channel to be announced later.

The game is officially a home contest for the Jets.

Broncos-Jets was a logical candidate to be moved overseas with the Jets already pegged as a host for one of the games in London this year. The teams have played at MetLife Stadium three times since 2018 and are scheduled to meet there again in 2026 per the NFL’s scheduling rotation.

They’ve also played each other in Denver during the 2021, 2022 and 2023 campaigns, meaning they will have dueled in seven consecutive seasons by the end of the 2026 season.

Broncos coach Sean Payton has expressed an affinity for games in Europe as offering a chance for team bonding experiences with practices away from team headquarters similar to what the team had last September at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va..

Thus, it appears likely the team will travel to England early in the week and hold its full week of practices there before facing the Jets.

LOOKING BACK ON THE BRONCOS’ TRIPS TO LONDON

Denver took the entire-week approach prior to its 2022 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, a triumph that snapped a four-game losing streak.

That game was a triumph, but it took place in tumultuous times for the Broncos, as the team was struggling during what would be the short-lived stewardship of Nathaniel Hackett. It was also in the midst of the Russell Wilson era, with word of his high-knee kicks on the team charter as he worked to get back into game shape following an injury turning into a punchline around the NFL.

Still, those beleaguered Broncos won, 21-17, a game that helped stave off the inevitable for Hackett.

The London game proved to be the Broncos’ only win in a 10-game stretch, as the Broncos returned from their bye and lost five games in a row before defeating the injury-depleted Arizona Cardinals.

The Broncos lost only other previous game in London, a 2010 contest against the San Francisco 49ers. In that case, they arrived Friday morning, holding their first two practices in Colorado.

But like their 2022 trip, that excursion was shrouded in tumult, as a team staff member illicitly recorded the 49ers’ walkthrough at Wembley Stadium, an act that came to public knowledge a few weeks later.

Nine days after news of that story broke, the Broncos fired McDaniels.

What the Broncos would like from this overseas excursion is a win without some form of fog shrouding the club.
