Ex-QB thinks Giants’ Jaxson Dart could start Week 1

The Giants entered the offseason with a big question mark at the quarterback position, but the picture has become clear as offseason workouts are underway,

The Giants signed Russell Wilson to be their starter this year and brought in Jameis Winston as their backup. They also addressed the future of the position by trading up nine spots in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Ole Miss signal caller Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 pick.

The idea is that Dart will be able to develop behind the veterans and become a solution under center for the years to come. But former NFL quarterback and current analyst Chris Simms would like to see Dart, who turns 22 on Tuesday, get in there sooner.

“Gosh, I would not be shocked if it started off right away. I wouldn’t be shocked,” he said on the Up & Adams Show. “I don’t expect the Giants to be a super team here, right? I’m not picking the Giants to go to the playoffs. The amount of money they’re paying Russell Wilson does not guarantee him the starting quarterback job.

“Those are things I look at to go, if Jaxson Dart is phenomenal through training camp and OTAs and has a really good preseason, and Russell Wilson’s just okay and doesn’t look all that sharp, I don’t think they’ll be scared to start Jaxson Dart here.”

Dart is behind Wilson and Winston in the QB room but in front of Tommy DeVito, whom the Giants re-signed this offseason. It’s not entirely out of the question that Dart could get a start (or a few) later in the season depending on the Giants’ record, but it’s unlikely he comes in Week 1.

In his senior season at Ole Miss, Dart threw for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns and six interceptions while adding 495 rushing yards and three more touchdowns on the ground.

Dart was the second quarterback selected in this year’s draft after Cam Ward, who went first overall to the Titans. To select Dart at No. 25, Giants general manager Joe Schoen surrendered two third-round picks (including one in 2026).
