Barcelona sporting director Deco has freshly admitted that his club are lacking in depth behind wing players Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, amid speculation linking the Spanish champions elect with a move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester Evening News reported that Barca had weighed up a move for Rashford in the January transfer window after it became clear that he was no longer in Ruben Amorim's plans.
However, due to their ongoing financial difficulties and their lack of interest in a loan, they did not pursue a deal and the 27-year-old instead completed the short-term switch to Aston Villa from United.
Now, whilst ESPN, who Deco was talking to, say Barca are not expected to make any 'major' signings again over the summer window, the sporting director suggested his club is short of players in the Englishman's role.
"If we can improve, that's always an option, but the key is to consolidate what we have for the coming years.
"Suddenly we feel quite dependent on Raphinha and Lamine. Maybe we need similar players, a solution for them [when they're not available]," the Portuguese confessed.
"But the squad is quite balanced and we have a lot of good players coming through the youth teams as well."
It is believed to be Rashford's dream to play for Barcelona one day as links continue to crop up approaching the next transfer window.
For now he is with Villa until the end of the season, where manager Unai Emery personally pushed for the signing as he felt he could help the attacker rediscover his form.
Rashford has scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 matches in the West Midlands, but recently suffered a hamstring injury that has hampered his progress.
The England international jetted off to Dubai to undergo warm weather recovery training with his season perhaps ended.
Villa have a £40m option to sign the player permanently, whilst last month The Manchester Evening News reported that Rashford will not make a decision on his future until the end of the season.
