Saints Make QB Move Following Derek Carr Retirement

The New Orleans Saints lost veteran quarterback Derek Carr to retirement last weekend, putting their quarterback room for next season into question. New Orleans doesn't have too many experienced players on the roster, so it's as good as anyone's guess who will be the starter.

But just a few days after New Orleans lost Carr, the team has made a signing at the position. The Saints are signing quarterback Hunter Dekkers to a deal.

Dekkers played at Iowa Western last season, throwing for 3,806 yards and 32 touchdowns. He will now add more talent to the depth chart for New Orleans as they continue the offseason.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news on social media.

Before he went to play for Iowa Western, Dekkers played at Iowa State for three years. During that time, he threw for 3,355 yards with 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Dekkers likely won't start for the Saints, but he does add depth if anything. New Orleans had expected Carr to start before he suffered the injury that ultimately forced him to retire.

Following the news of his retirement, Carr released a statement on his decision.

"Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League," said Carr. "For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us."

The Saints' quarterback room now includes Dekkers, Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener. New head coach Kellen Moore will likely allow them to have a competition once training camp begins.
