49ers' NFC West rival has a cornerback problem (and that's a good thing)

The Seahawks are apparently scrambling for a cornerback, which could put the 49ers offense in a happy position twice this year.

More pessimistic San Francisco 49ers fans may think the rest of the NFC West got stronger during the offseason, while the Niners were beset by mass player departures and a focus on 11 first-year rookies shouldering a massive load after being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Perhaps there's an argument to that, but there are plenty of problems plaguing San Francisco's division rivals heading into the deeper parts of the offseason.

Including issues facing the Seattle Seahawks.

The Hawks underwent a turbulent offseason, too, jettisoning two of their most prolific pass-catching threats, wide receivers Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf, and doing awfully little to replace them.

But Seattle's issues include the defensive side of the ball, too, evidenced by some recent scrambling to reinforce the secondary.

Seahawks desperately looking to fill cornerback void

As described by our colleagues over at 12th Man Rising, the Seahawks have been searching for cornerback help in the post-draft days and weeks.

That includes bringing in an aging Rasul Douglas, as reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:

Veteran CB Rasul Douglas is visiting the #Seahawks today, per source.

Lee Vowell of 12MR summarized what the search for an additional corner to pair with Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe secretly means:

"After not taking a cornerback in the draft, bringing in [Shaquill] Griffin twice for a look, and having Douglas visit, it is clear is that the Seahawks are not sure of their cornerback room heading into 2025. The truth is, however, Griffin or Douglas might not be the answer for the Seahawks."

The Hawks didn't prioritize their cornerback room via the draft, and it appears as if the remaining scrap heap of free agents is the lone remaining pool from which to choose.

Apparently, they're not wholly thrilled with those options either.

Regardless, this is welcomed news from the 49ers' vantage point, who'll be challenged to replicate what was the league's fourth-best passing attack with quarterback Brock Purdy under center in 2024.

Judging by Seattle's recent scramble drill, it sounds like the Niners should be able to continue those kinds of efforts at least twice this upcoming season.
