Pete Carroll leaks that Raiders, Seahawks will play in preseason opener

Pete Carroll joined Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk on Wednesday morning for the first time since becoming Las Vegas Raiders head coach, and he broke a little news when he did.

Even though he probably wasn’t supposed to.

Where Seahawks’ strength of schedule ranks for 2025

The longtime former Seattle Seahawks coach was talking about the end of his time with the Seahawks and what the team did in the first year after he was replaced as head coach by Mike Macdonald, when he suddenly changed course and asked hosts Brock Huard and Mike Salk a question.

“The changes (the Seahawks) made have obviously turned out great. They got a good coach and a good staff and they’re rolling, and so more power to him,” Carroll said. “Hey, what a coincidence, huh? How about the opening game of the preseason?”

And then a beat later: “Is that out yet?”

The preseason schedule, as it turns out, is not out yet. But we can safely assume now that the first game for Carroll’s new team will be against his old team.

"Hey, what a coincidence, huh?" 😂

“No, not out yet,” Huard responded with a laugh.

“Wait’ll you see,” Carroll wryly said.

At the end of the conversation, Carroll offered an apology to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell if he did in fact let something slip that he shouldn’t have.

“Sorry, Rodge,” Carroll said.

That idea of a Seahawks-Raiders preseason game intrigued Salk about something Carroll was averse to during his time in Seattle, but something the team did last year under Macdonald.

“Can we get a joint practice, coach?” Salk asked. “I know you were always against it but they seem to be for it here now. Let’s do joint practices leading up to a preseason game.”

“They’re for it because I’m not there,” Carroll said. “No, we’re not gonna do that.”

While the NFL preseason schedule isn’t out yet, the full regular season schedule for all 32 teams will be announced at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
