49ers may (or may not) see Russell Wilson when they visit Giants midseason

The 49ers visit the Giants in the middle of the 2025 season, but it's unclear whether or not they'll face an old nemesis in Russell Wilson.

Quarterback Russell Wilson's name alone is enough to make nearly every San Francisco 49ers fan cringe a little bit.

Perhaps those memories of the Niners' heated rivalry with Wilson's old team, the Seattle Seahawks, has something to do with this. After all, Wilson and the Hawks mostly bested San Francisco during the rivalry's heyday back in the early 2010s and throughout much of the decade before the quarterback ultimately departed for an unceremonious tenure with the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Despite a perceived downfall, Wilson still boasts an impressive 17-4 regular-season record over the 49ers, so those cringeworthy sentiments are well deserved.

But, will Wilson have a shot at going 18-4 when his newest team, the New York Giants, host the Niners this season?

Well, it depends.

It's unclear if Russell Wilson is starting for Giants when they host 49ers in Week 9

According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, the G-Men will host San Francisco in Week 9, which leaves a lot of time for New York's own budding quarterback controversy to play itself out.

Speaking of that controversy, the Giants have plenty of question marks to answer under center, and Wilson is just one piece that also includes a veteran journeyman, Jameis Winston, and rookie signal-caller Jaxson Dart.

For now, it would appear as if Wilson is the favorite to start for head coach Brian Daboll. However, Daboll's shaky footing on a coaching hot seat could mean a change at quarterback at some point during the season, especially in light of what's perceived as a brutal opening phase of the G-Men's schedule.

Remember, no one is more popular on a struggling team than a backup quarterback, especially if he's a rookie.

Perhaps Wilson still gives Daboll and the Giants the best shot at winning when the 49ers travel to MetLife Stadium in Week 9.

Or it could be Winston. Or Dart.

Based on Wilson's previous track record, however, perhaps the Niners hope either Winston or Dart is under center by that point.
