The Pittsburgh Steelers will play former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields will play former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields and the New York Jets in Week 1, sources tell PennLive, and multiple reports confirm.
While Aaron Rodgers has yet to sign his contract offer, it will be a double revenge game if he does. The Jets released Rodgers in March, and they took umbrage at the way they handled his release.
Rodgers says he flew across the country from California to New York expecting a deep conversation with new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, but they released him within 15 minutes.
That was kind of strange,” Rodgers said. “I think we are going to have this long conversation. I’ve flown across the country, and 20 seconds in he goes and he leans to the edge of his seat and says, ‘So, you want to play football?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he was like, ‘We’re going in a different direction at quarterback.’ I was kind of shocked. Not shocked because I didn’t think it was a possibility, but shocked because I just flew across the country and you could’ve told me this over the phone.”
As for Fields, he decided to go to New York for a better contract offer and a guaranteed starting spot. His two-year, $40 million deal with $30 million guaranteed was an offer the Steelers were unwilling to match.
“Our relationship playing against each other means a lot because Detroit, of course, they’ve had a lot of success the past couple of years,” Fields said of Glenn. “So for him to want me here is definitely an honor, and I’m going to put it all on the line for him and do all I can to help this team be successful.”
Now, in Week 1, the Steelers will have a chance to knock off Fields while he can show them they should have paid him to be their starting quarterback in 2025.
