Kansas City Chiefs opening 2025 season in Brazil with first-of-its-kind matchup against Los Angeles Chargers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KY3) - Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to become one of the debut teams in a new NFL broadcast venture.

The NFL announced Wednesday that the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers will meet in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season in a game broadcast on YouTube. The game will be played on Friday, Sept. 5, marking the second year in a row an NFL game in Brazil will be played on the Friday following the NFL’s season-opener.

Los Angeles will serve as the home team. This will be the second time the two teams have met in an international game, following a 2019 game in Mexico City at Azteca Stadium.

The Chiefs’ YouTube broadcast continues a trend. They’ve now been featured in the debut broadcast of Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football package, Peacock’s exclusive Wild Card playoff broadcast, and Netflix’s Christmas Day broadcast.

Kansas City is 11-3 against the Chargers during the Patrick Mahomes era of Chiefs football. The Chiefs won both games against Los Angeles last season, which was the first with head coach Jim Harbaugh in charge of the Bolts.

It’ll be the first time the Chiefs have played internationally since they beat the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany, in November 2023.
