About the matchup
The two franchises have played just 25 times in their storied histories. Their last encounter game in 2021 where the Browns defeated the Lions, 13-10. Detroit owns the series, 19-6.
The Lions (15-2) are coming off a dominant regular season but were ousted in the divisional round of the playoffs by the Washington Commanders. The offense is littered with stars, including receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and the lethal running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit’s defense was shredded in the postseason after it was decimated by injuries, including star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.
Cleveland is coming off a disastrous 3-14 campaign that was marred with misfortune and misery. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has returned for a second stint, while defensive centerpiece Myles Garrett has decided to help accelerate the rebuild. Cleveland will try to reignite its running back room and sort out a mixed bag of mystery at the quarterback position, which has been a reoccurring theme for the better part of 25 years and counting.
