All the early injury news surrounding Arsenal and Newcastle United as they prepare to face off in the Premier League.
Arsenal welcome Newcastle United on Sunday with the opportunity to have their say on the Champions League race. The Gunners still aren’t guaranteed second place, only two points ahead of this weekend’s rivals Newcastle, and so they suddenly do have something to play for this weekend after weeks of what have felt like free hits in the league.
Newcastle are still battling for a Champions League spot as things stand, and with a three-point advantage over seventh placed Aston Villa in seventh, and with a significantly superior goal difference, they can effectively wrap up their spot in next season’s Champions League. Here we round up the latest injury news surrounding the Gunners and the Magpies.
Lewis Hall - Out
Hall is out for the season with an ankle injury. Eddie Howe has said: “He's doing great. I don't think we will see him play again this season if we are being honest. But he's recovering, and he is on the right road to recovery. We will certainly see him back again next season.”
Matt Targett - Out
Targett is out with a hamstring issue, and his season may be over. Howe said in late April: “We also lost Matty this week to a slight hamstring problem. Again, nothing serious but maybe enough to end his season.”
Joelinton - Out
Issuing a fresh update on Joelinton, Howe said: “I saw Joe yesterday for the first time in a while, as he'd been away... He's been back in Barcelona for another injection. I think he's feeling pretty good. Whether we see him before the end of the season, we’ll see.”
Sven Botman - Doubt
Botman was withdrawn last time out, and Howe explained: “He was slightly uncomfortable in the HT break with a knee problem. I don't think it's serious. He was obviously OK to carry on, but he was feeling something so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change. With that in mind, we brought Lewis Miley on.”
Kieran Trippier - Doubt
Howe has said: “We don't think they are big injuries. But there is such a short time left of the season. We'd love to get them back quick and able to play a part, [but] I don't know if that is possible.” It seems unlikely Trippier will return so quickly, but he has not yet been ruled out.
Joe Willock - Doubt
The same update was issued of Willock.
Mikel Merino - Out (Suspended)
Merino is suspended for this fixture due to receiving two yellow cards last time out.
Declan Rice - Doubt
Arteta said before the Liverpool game: “I think he is struggling, it does not look good.” Rice did not feature against Liverpool and will remain a doubt here.
Leandro Trossard - Doubt
Trossard is a major doubt after limping off with a hamstring injury last time out.
Jorginho - Out
Jorginho is set to miss the rest of the season. Arteta confirmed recently: “Jorginho is still out. Jorginho’s got a bit more complicated than expected. Thankfully, he's fine, he's feeling good, he's recovering well, but yeah, it was a bit more than what we wanted. I think I'll leave it to the doctor if he wants to clarify or judge that.” Asked if the injury is season-ending, Arteta added: “I think so, yeah. Hopefully, if everything goes well in the next week or so, I think he will gradually integrate in the team, yeah. “
Gabriel Jesus - Out
Jesus is out for the season with a ruptured ACL, and he is not likely to return until towards the end of 2025. A statement confirmed at the time: “Further to being substituted during our match with Man United, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the ACL in his left knee.”
Takehiro Tomiyasu - Out
Tomiyasu is out for the season after requiring an extra surgery. A statement confirmed at the time: “Despite an initial procedure, followed by a RTT, Tomi continued to have issues with his knee, resulting in a further corrective surgical procedure. He will now begin his rehab programme, which is expected to be completed towards the end of this year.”
Kai Havertz - Doubt
Havertz was thought to be out for the season, but he now looks as though he might return before the end of the campaign. Arteta responded when asked if that was possible: “I think so. I think if everything goes the way it's going at the moment and the way it's planned, I think he will have a chance to play a few games here in the season.” We haven’t heard much since then, and so Havertz remains a doubt.
Gabriel Magalhaes - Out
Gabriel is out for the season. A statement confirmed at the time: “Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season.”
