The Eagles will be under more spotlight during the 2025 NFL season, starting with their matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in the league’s season opener. In total, the defending champs will play seven standalone games this year.
According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, this is bad news for the Eagles’ chances of keeping the tush push from being banned.
“The fact that at least four — and likely more — Eagles games will be played at a time when many are watching will only make it more likely that sufficient arms will be twisted to torpedo the tush push,” Florio wrote on Tuesday.
In April, NFL owners tabled voted the ban on the tush push after not receiving enough votes to outlaw it, according to ESPN. During next week’s league meetings in Minneapolis, NFL owners could revisit the proposal and ban the play.
Some teams have argued the tush push is a safety concern, but no evidence has been presented to support that argument.
Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay said at the owner meetings that he wants the play banned because he doesn’t like the optics of it. Other NFL coaches have expressed a similar viewpoint — and it could be the reason NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ends up supporting the ban.
The Eagles already have a plan in place for short-yardage situations in case the tush pan is outlawed.
“We’re going to quietly try to resurrect the fullback position,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said on the WIP Morning Show last week.
