**Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian has purchased 8-10% share in Chelsea Women, something Sonia Bompastor has hailed as a ‘game changing investment’ into the women’s game.**
Ohanian, husband of tennis legend Serena Williams and former Angel City FC shareholder, has bought an impressive stake in the English champions.
“As Founding Control Owner of Angel City FC, I’ve seen the opportunity to create and grow a worldwide brand within women’s football, and I’m confident Chelsea FC Women is the next global women’s sports brand,” said Ohanian when reflecting on his decision to place an investment.
Head coach Sonia Bompastor praised the news ahead of Chelsea’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup Final against Manchester United.
“I think this investment is a game changing investment for the women’s game, but also for young girls. I think we spoke about the investment, but also the values under that, and I think that’s really important for the women’s game again, but also for England. When someone who invests in a team like Chelsea, it just shows like we are in a really great place at the moment, but we still want to be even a better team, better club, and we want to be one of the best team in in the world.
“So it means in terms of results on the pitch, but also we want to be a model outside the pitch. We want to make sure when the young girls look at our team, they just dream being one of our players for the future, and I think we have the right people around the women’s team in terms of value investment, and that’s really nice to be part of this project.”

The Reddit owner currently has a net worth of over $150 million, and his share in Chelsea is said to amount to £20m. The investment will be a Women’s-only sharehold, something Bompastor spoke about with praise.
“I think the club made some decisions in the past weeks, and I think they’ve made the right decisions in terms of just allowing these women’s team to have investors who come in and just bring the team even to another level. So I think that’s really nice, because these investments will only go to the women’s team. So it will help the women’s team to invest in terms of infrastructures, in terms of facilities, in terms of staff, players, again, so I think that’s really nice and positive.
“We want to be the team who shows to every other team how you need to perform and how you need to invest in the women’s game. So hopefully this example will bring some of the people who will invest in women’s team in this league. So I think that’s just the example we need to set for ourselves, but also to show to the other teams what they need to do. I think that’s really good again for us to be in that position, and I want us to stay in that position for a long time.”

A victory over the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium will secure Chelsea the domestic treble, having comfortably sailed through the league unbeaten. The only thing missing is success in Europe, something Bompastor hopes that this investment will aid in the future.
“The club already had a lot of success, but also we want to make sure we are in a position to compete for the Champions League this year. We couldn’t, and we were not successful, and I take the responsibility for that, but hopefully next year we’ll be in a better position, but having this exciting news and this great investment in the women’s team will have for sure.”
