Joe knew this news many months ago but didn’t get it with the ability to share, but Joe can get the word out today.
The next Buccaneers Ring of Honor member will be defensive end extraordinaire Simeon Rice. TampaBay.com announced it this morning.
Rice is deserving. Just ask his ex-Bucs teammates and Jon Gruden. From 2001 through 2007, Rice was a terror on most days. In his first five Bucs seasons, he racked up 67 1/2 sacks in the regular season, and he was a monster in the postseason.
The Bucs defense was very special around him, but there’s no question Rice elevated those greats when he arrived as a free agent from the Cardinals.
Rice has been a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist, but it hasn’t happened often.
If he can reach finalist status, then he gets into “the room” for presentation by Ira Kaufman. Maybe Rice’s Ring of Honor induction gets him back on that path.
Rice is a character, so Joe is expecting a unique speech on induction day.
