New proposal would let NFL players be Olympians, but there’s a catch

The NFL is set to discuss a resolution that would allow players to play flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The resolution, which was obtained by multiple reporters, is set to be voted on by NFL owners at the league meeting next week.

The proposal would permit players under contract with NFL teams “to try out for a flag football team participating in the 2028 Olympics.”

The 2028 Summer Games, which will be held in Los Angeles, will feature flag football as a sport for the first time ever.

However, the resolution has a hard limitation on the number of players who would be able to participate. Under the proposal, only one player from each NFL franchise would be allowed to compete. Players who are part of the league’s International Player program would not count against that number.

The NFL proposal will also include some caveats to protect teams in case of an injury. The proposal would add rules to add salary cap credit to a team if one of their players is injured while participating in flag football.

Additionally, the NFL is also looking to ensure “certain minimum standards” for available medical staff and field conditions for players participating.
