The New York Giants have a plan ... and maybe they don't "give a flip'' about the obstacles.
That plan? They moved around in the NFL Draft and selected quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first round with the hopes of developing him into a franchise quarterback.
Clearly, they feel he has the tools to elicit real upside. But refining those tools and getting him up to NFL speed with his pre-snap operation and post-snap processing could take some time.
That might be a path made easier with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston ahead of him on the depth chart. ... as both of them represent "bridges'' to the New York future.
Indeed ...
Wilson will start in Week 1, and Dart will get the opportunity to learn in one of the league’s most experienced quarterback rooms, not to mention learning at the feeet head coach Brian Daboll, who was hired in part in the first place to develop a stud passer as a New York centerpiece.
But there is something else about the path, something some find worrisome ...
After a video clip from rookie camp spread on social media, some Giants watchers are concerned about one of Dart’s notable mechanical habits.
Sometimes, Dart will flip the ball in his hands during his dropback, as was captured at a recent practice video.
Is there a reason for concern?
He’s done it before in college during his time at Ole Miss. But he doesn't do it all the time and there is no real evidence that it gets him in trouble.
Dart is said to have a good feel for the pocket; maybe the flip is part of his rhythm ... or maybe the coach Brian Daboll-led staff will try to work him out of it viewing it as an unneeded risk and a waste of motion.
Let's mark it down not in a panicky way but rather as one more issue for a rookie QB to deal with before he's ready to win a meaningful NFL game.
