Ex-New England Patriots QB thinks Drake Maye’s run game has ability to be ‘backbreaker’

Drew Bledsoe didn’t run a whole lot when he was the quarterback of the New England Patriots, so it’s a trait he enjoys watching in Drake Maye.

Maye racked up 421 rushing yards with two touchdowns in his rookie year under center for New England. The quarterback was a bright spot during a tough 4-13 season.

For Bledsoe, Maye’s run game is not only something he admittedly is a bit jealous of, he believes Maye can use it to his advantage and be a “backbreaker” for the Patriots.

“It’s such a great weapon and something, quite honestly, I’m a little bit jealous of,” Bledsoe said recently on “Up and Adams.” “I’m not saying do it more, but the ability to do that really changes him. You watch Pat Mahomes, it seems like every game, Pat would make one big play running the ball. Obviously, he’s magic throwing the ball. It always seemed like in crunch time he’d pull it down to run for that first down that was just a backbreaker. I think Drake Maye has the ability to do that.”

Maye is entering a big Year 2 for the Patriots. The team added more protection for him by drafting Will Campbell with the fourth pick in the NFL Draft and gave him an extra weapon in Stefon Diggs. And with Josh McDaniels returning as the offensive coordinator, it could open doors for Maye to run more and showcase his talent further.
