Former Alabama defensive tackle Christian Barmore is poised to return to the field this fall after a recurrence of blood clots derailed his 2024 season.
Barmore confirmed on Thursday that he has been medically cleared for football activity and expects to be available on Sept. 7 when the New England Patriots open the season against the Las Vegas Raiders. Barmore, a second-round pick of the Patriots in 2021, started just 4 games last season as he dealt with the clotting issue.
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Barmore has been a “consistent” participant during the Patriots’ voluntary offseason workouts. He told reporters he expects to be a full participant when organized activities begin next week.
“Yeah. That’s the goal. I just have to keep following the medical team, but everything is looking really well,” Barmore said.
Barmore has played in 48 games over the course of his Patriots career. He signed a 4-year, $92 million extension last offseason, but was later diagnosed with a blood clot issue that forced him to miss the first 10 games of the 2024 season. Barmore returned in mid-November but played in just 4 games before experiencing recurring symptoms.
When he was asked if there was any concern about another recurrence, Barmore said there was none. He declined to answer a question about what caused the clotting issue, but said he’s back to feeling like himself.
“Feeling good, more confidence in myself, back to my breathing. I’m just feeling really good,” Barmore said. “Talking my smack, yeah. All of that.”
