Ex-England Keeper Tips Arsenal To Make "A Real Statement" And Sign Nico Williams Alternative

Former England international and Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has said it would be a “real statement” if Arsenal were to sign Real Madrid winger Rodrygo.

The Gunners are expected to sign a striker this summer, but have also been tipped to add a winger, with their number one target reportedly being Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

Williams has a £48m release clause, and it looks as though he will be the winger target that Arsenal decide to go after, however, they have also been linked with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

Reports have suggested a valuation of around £84m for Rodrygo, who would likely replace Gabriel Martinelli and complete a winger pairing with Bukayo Saka.

Former England international Paul Robinson told Football Insider, that it would be a huge move if the Gunners could pull it off. He said: “He is is a wide player – they need a number nine, but if you sign him and a number nine, that’s a real statement.

“What it would cost you to get Rodrygo, and would he want to go to Arsenal, is two different things. The need for a number nine is pressing.

“[Bukayo] Saka will play on the right-hand side, Rodrygo can play on the left – if you have those two as a wide pairing, that’s one hell of a pairing to fit in behind a world-class number nine.”

Which ‘number nine’ will Arsenal sign up front?

As things stand, the most likely striker signing for the Gunners seems to be Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. He is a key target of Andrea Berta, and would solve Arsenal’s long term striker issue.

Gyokeres has netted 38 goals in 32 league games for the Portuguese side, and interest from Man United seems to have cooled in recent weeks, leaving Arsenal to be the front-runners to land him.

United look likely to sign Wolves striker Matheus Cunha instead, for whom Arsenal did make a late move for, but the Brazilian reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford.
