According to a report by Football Insider, Arsenal are planning to get rid of Gabriel Martinelli and they have identified Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon as a suitable replacement.

The Gunners are revamping their front line and Mikel Arteta seems to be willing to offload Martinelli after the Brazilian international has had a poor season. His contract expires in 2027 with an option for one more year and Arsenal are confident they will be able to get good value for him.

Should Arsenal go after Anthony Gordon?

Gabriel Martinelli has scored 10 goals and provided only 5 assists in 49 games this season and there’s no denying Mikel Arteta will need a better left winger if Arsenal genuinely want to challenge for silverware next season.

However, we just do not see Anthony Gordon as a fitting alternative.

The 24-year-old had a great couple of months during the middle of the season but his numbers are far worse than that of Martinelli. Gordon has managed just 15 goal contributions in 49 appearances this season with a passing accuracy of only 81%. His work rate and team contribution is unmatched but even Gabriel Martinelli puts in a proper shift every time he’s on the pitch.

Martinelli’s current market value is £46 million and if Arsenal push hard they will be able to secure around £50-55 million from his exit. However, if they are seriously considering a move for Anthony Gordon then the management will have to pay around £30-35 million more from their own pockets.

The club is already spending a considerable amount on Zubimendi plus they are also going to sign a new striker. If Thomas Partey does not extend his deal then Arsenal will have to bring in another central midfielder as well.

In such a situation, we do not see why Arsenal would go out and spend £80-90 million on Anthony Gordon.

Will Newcastle United agree to sell the winger?

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has repeatedly made it clear that Anthony Gordon is an integral part of the squad and he has no plans to sell him.

Yes, they need to balance their books to avoid an FFP breach but the Magpies are confident of bringing in funds from other important sales. This means NUFC have no reason to drop their asking price and that’s going to be the killer blow for Arsenal.

Unless an eye-popping bid comes in, we expect Anthony Gordon to remain at Newcastle United.
