Newcastle United are braced for a “battle” to retain midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, with the Magpies making the first move to keep the Brazil international away from the clutches of Arsenal and Al-Hilal.

The 27-year-old midfielder has enjoyed another excellent season with Newcastle, during which he has been one of the leading performers in his position in the Premier League.

Following a campaign in which he has so far chalked up five goals and five assists, playing in every match of the league campaign to date, Bruno has attracted covetous glances from both Arsenal and the Saudi Pro League giants.

There were reports that the Gunners lodged a first bid of around €70m for the player in March, while the former Lyon ace has emerged as Saudi’s top target should a move for Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes fall through.

With an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €83.2 million, he is one of Newcastle’s most valuable assets, and though he has a contract until 2028, the Magpies have taken concrete steps to tie him down to a new deal.

Valentin Furlan, a specialist in Brazilian football transfer news, reports on X: “Newcastle have opened talks was Bruno Guimaraes over a now contract.

“Newcastle have no plans to sell the Brazil international and are preparing for a fierce battle to keep him in the summer.”

Will Bruno Guimaraes leave Newcastle?

Arsenal are unlikely to be able to afford the type of money that Eddie Howe’s side will want for the player, which is likely to be a Premier League record fee.

That is not such an issue for clubs in the Saudi Pro League, which is eager to secure a major name after being knocked by Mo Salah, who chose to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

The money put aside to bring the Egypt international to Al-Hilal is still available and could be channelled towards a move for Bruno.

Newcastle and the Pro League outfit, though, are owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is unlikely to work against the interests of the Magpies, suggesting they will not be a serious threat at this point.
