Man City are interested in a two-time Champions League winner
Manchester City are believed to have been handed a vital boost in their hopes of acquiring in-demand Real Madrid winger Rodrygo in the summer window.
The Brazil international is reported by Fichajes to be frustrated with his lack of game time in the Spanish capital this season and his camp has already met with City, Chelsea and Arsenal. While Mail Sport has even gone as far to suggest that the 24-year-old no longer wants to play for the club again, with the winger intending to follow future national team boss Carlo Ancelotti out of the door this summer.
Rodrygo has been on Pep Guardiola’s radar for a number of seasons and is considered the calibre of player that can boost his side’s chances of winning the Premier League effort after a feeble title push in this year’s campaign.
Could Man City sign Rodrgyo this summer?
Pep Guardiola is reported to see Rodrgyo as the perfect solution to his side’s attacking problems as he looks to add fresh flair and excitement to his City team. The former Barcelona coach is reported to have already held talks with Rodrygo’s representatives as they aim to bolster their ranks ahead of the Club World Cup.
The 2023 treble winners were recently held by basement side Southampton during their last outing and have lacked the same attacking edge this term that has helped them win titles in previous seasons.
Erling Haaland has performed well despite injury with 21 goals in 29 league games while Omar Marmoush has shown signs of promise with six in his opening 14 matches after a stellar first half of the season with former club Frankfurt.
However, the wide attackers at City have struggled to find the net on a regular basis. Jeremy Doku has just three league goals this season, while Jack Grealish and Savinho have each scored just one goal.
This is a huge drop off from the numbers that past wingers such as Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Leroy Sane all managed on a regular basis during their pomp.
Rodrygo is a player with the quality to add goals to the frontline. He has managed 16 and 10 assists across the last two league seasons for Madrid and has scored five in all of the last four Champions League campaigns including goals in both legs against City during last year’s quarter-final.
Arsenal decision offers Man City key boost
Premier League heavyweights Arsenal are in the market for attacking reinforcements and had been touted as key contenders to sign Rodrygo alongside the Cityzens, via Fichajes.
The outlet claims the North London side would prefer to prioritise a move for a centre forward to provide further competition for Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus next season after both players’ struggles with injuries this term.
Arsenal’s decision to sway away from the race leaves City in an advantageous position if there is substance to the rumours of the Brazilian’s desire to leave the Bernebau although it’s also understood that Chelsea are monitoring the situation closely.
