As the summer transfer window looms large, Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman has emerged as one of the most sought-after names in a potential transfer to the Premier League. The 27-year-old Nigerian international has been in top form in Serie A, drawing the attention of at least five Premier League teams—Chelsea included.
Lookman’s performance this season says it all. With 25 goal contributions across competitions, he has shown both consistency and flexibility in Atalanta’s attack. Whether used out wide or centrally, his quick movement and clinical finishing have made him the standout in Italian football.
This output has naturally fueled speculation regarding his future. As per reports, Lookman will be departing Serie A this summer. The forward is now being eyed closely by some of the Premier League’s biggest teams. That includes Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Arsenal.
It’s not English sides alone expressing interest. FC Barcelona are said to have made an approach to the player’s representatives. Although, financial limitations and attacking strength at the moment might deny them making any genuine bid. Juventus too have withdrawn from contention, deterred by Lookman’s price—alleged to be within the €60 million to €65 million mark.
That tag may also prove to be English clubs’ point of contention, particularly the clubs already investing much in young, long-term options. Still, Lookman’s Premier League pedigree, and the recent adaptation he has demonstrated in Italy, present him as a strong choice for top teams searching for direct effect.
Chelsea’s Role in the Pursuit for Lookman
Although Chelsea are also named one of the strongest favorites, their interest may be less tangible compared to others. Chelsea have also been actively monitoring wide forwards but possibly redirecting attention towards cheaper and younger assets. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, for instance, is said to be a first-priority target. At just 19, Borussia Dortmund’s winger matches Chelsea’s new approach to recruiting better than Lookman.
Chelsea’s current options on the wings—Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, and even Cole Palmer in more advanced positions—have yielded uneven returns this season. While Palmer has been exceptional, others have lacked consistency and been plagued by injuries. Lookman’s established productivity could fill that gap. But his age and the premium acquisition price might put off Chelsea’s hierarchy, who are increasingly prioritizing sustainable squad-building.
Lookman’s Premier League experience is another advantage he brings. With past spells at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, the forward has witnessed firsthand the physicality and tempo that exists at English football. Since joining Atalanta, he has become a more rounded and assured striker, hence a more desirable commodity now than when he was in England previously.
Yet Chelsea’s latest project is focused more on younger, high-potential, long-term resale options. That is where Lookman may not quite fit the bill. His price and age profile might not be what the club is looking for, particularly in comparison to emerging talent like Bynoe-Gittens.
Outlook for the Summer Window
As things are, Lookman seems set for a return to the Premier League. Whether that is with Chelsea is not certain. ManUnited and Liverpool, who might be in the market for more seasoned wide men, might make stronger bids for him. For Chelsea, the search may continue to be focused on younger players unless market forces change dramatically.
In the weeks ahead, much will depend on how other transfer dominoes fall. A swift resolution to Lookman’s future is unlikely, especially with other suitors closely watching developments. For now, the forward continues to attract attention across Europe as one of the most talked-about attacking options heading into the summer window.
