Arsenal'one step away'from Newcastle transfer hijack but not for Alexander Isak

Arsenal are said to be facing a transfer battle with Newcastle United to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The Gunners are known to be targeting a backup goalkeeper to David Raya this summer with the Spanish star fully established as the club's No.1 - now with the shirt number to match. football.london understands the team are also looking to sign a No.9 and a wide attacker, with central midfielder Martin Zubimendi also likely to arrive.

Links to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Real Madrid star Rodrygo have intensified in recent weeks, while the rumour mill has been spinning about the likes of Nico Williams and Newcastle star Alexander Isak for some time.

The Gunners are known to be fond of Isak, but any deal with the Toon Army would be a difficult one to get done, given the club's potential of featuring in the Champions League next season and a high price they would attach to their star man.

While a saga over Isak's future was one of the potential storylines for the summer transfer window, the Gunners and Newcastle could be set for a battle on another player.

The Gunners are known to be interested in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The idea is that the 24-year-old will come in as backup to Raya, but also to push him and provide strong competition, much as Raya did to Aaron Ramsdale when he arrived on loan from Brentford.

However, a spanner may have been thrown in the works for Mikel Arteta, with reports in Spain claiming that Newcastle are also hoping to complete a move for the keeper.

Spanish journalist Angel Garcia has claimed that Eddie Howe and co. are "on the verge" of a deal, with a move to St James' Park "one step away".

Like all La Liga players, Garcia has a release clause in his contract at Espanyol. His is believed to be around €25million (£21.1million). With the first of two transfer windows set to open at the beginning of June, the Gunners may have to be quick if they wish to seal a move for the highly-rated keeper.
