Report: Arsenal plan backfires as Newcastle United have the chance to do something brilliant

It is no secret that Arsenal want to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Why wouldn’t they? After all, Alexander Isak is one of the best strikers on the planet and Arsenal desperately need to sign a goalscorer.

However, Isak to Arsenal is not considered realistic as the summer transfer window looms.

The Magpies have no plans to sell the 25-year-old. Even if they did, Isak would be way too expensive.

Now, with the two sides set to face each other on Sunday, Newcastle United could extinguish Arsenal’s hopes of signing the super Swede.

Newcastle United can finally ruin Arsenal’s Alexander Isak plan

Newcastle United know that a win over Arsenal on Sunday will move them up to second in the Premier League.

It could also ensure that Isak remains on Tyneside.

That is because the Athletic have claimed that Arsenal were hoping that Newcastle United would miss out on Champions League football, which would give them a chance to sign Isak.

However, Newcastle United could completely scupper those plans this weekend.

If Eddie Howe’s side beat Arsenal on Sunday, they will effectively guarantee Champions League football for next season.

Even if Newcastle do not get the job done in North London, they are still in an extremely strong position to finish in the Premier League’s top five.

However, it would be extremely sweet for the Magpies to qualify on Sunday. Not only would it relieve any pressure going into the final game, but it would also mean Arsenal’s Isak plan blows up in their own backyard.

Alexander Isak nominated for Premier League award

It has been another exceptional season for Isak.

He has done even better than last season. During the 2023/24 campaign, he netted 25 goals in all competitions. The 2024/25 season has brought 27 goals so far, with two games remaining.

In terms of just Premier League goals, Isak has increased his tally from 21 to 23, with only Mohamed Salah scoring more than him.

That is why Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever has been nominated for the Premier League player of the season award.

Isak is one of eight players nominated for the top prize. The full list of nominees is:

Morgan Gibbs-White

Ryan Gravenberch

Alexander Isak

Bryan Mbeumo

Declan Rice

Mohamed Salah

Virgil van Dijk

Chris Wood

Elsewhere, Eddie Howe is nominated for the Premier League manager of the season award.

Alan Shearer thinks Howe should win it if the Magpies finish second in the table, but the award is likely to go to Liverpool boss Arne Slot.

There are no Newcastle United players nominated for young player of the season.
