Manchester United have named their team for tonight’s game at Chelsea.
The game has become effectively meaningless in the league considering the team’s abysmal form this season, but it has some significance as Ruben Amorim seeks to finalise his Europa League final team for next week.
United are already guaranteed a Premier League-worst campaign, and in fact still need to get another point from their last two games to avoid the embarassment of finishing with as few points as Blackpool did when they were relegated in 2011.
United last won at Stamford Bridge in the league in 2020, and lost there in a crazy game towards the end of last season, when the Blues scored twice in injury time to win 4-3.
Ruben Amorim confirmed in his pre-match conference that he wouldn’t be taking any risks.
“If there is a player that can get an injury, not recovered for this game so will put him in risk for the final, he will not play,” said the boss. “But if it’s not that situation, we will have a lot of time to recover, and we cannot spend eight days, nine days without a game. That is a bad thing for the final so I think they will be prepared for the game.
“The best thing to prepare the final is to play the game. The players have to understand that if you play or don’t play against Chelsea, it means nothing to the final, that is important. I’m just preparing the game of Chelsea, that is my focus. We want to win and we want to perform.”
Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro remain out but could be back for the final, while Joshua Zirzkee and Lisandro Martinez will definitely be out until next season.
