The 49ers fully committed to Brock Purdy with a whopping five-year contract extension, one that'll look cheap not too long from now.
The San Francisco 49ers just crossed off the biggest item on their offseason to-do list.
Quarterback Brock Purdy isn't going anywhere for a long, long time. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, citing the quarterback's representative agency, Purdy and the Niners are agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth up to $265 million, $181 million of which is guaranteed.
Pelissero broke the news the Friday after the 2025 NFL schedule release:
This effectively ends the discussion about what the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft should earn on a new deal.
Putting it bluntly, he's getting an annual average of $53 million per. It's not the most for quarterbacks around the league, but it puts him within the top 10. And it's arguably the going rate for well-established starters now, too.
It is a hefty amount of guaranteed money, though, which ranks second only behind the $230 million for the Cleveland Browns' Deshaun Watson.
Unlike Watson's catastrophic contract, though, Purdy's deal could end up being a massive bargain in the not-so-distant future.
Brock Purdy's contract with 49ers will age like fine wine
Of course, Purdy has to live up to playing like a $50-plus million per-year quarterback. That's understood and fair to question after a down 2024.
But, let's consider the numbers where Purdy lands among top-paid QBs:
Dak Prescott, Cowboys -- $60 million
Josh Allen, Bills -- $55 million
Joe Burrow, Bengals -- $55 million
Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars -- $55 million
Jordan Love, Packers -- $55 million
Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins -- $53.1 million
Brock Purdy, 49ers -- $53 million
Jared Goff, Lions -- $53 million
Justin Herbert, Chargers -- $52.5 million
Lamar Jackson, Ravens -- $52 million
We'll have to see the details about how Purdy's contract is structured, yes. But, all one has to do is take a look at the predicted 2026 salary cap, which Over the Cap predicts to be just shy of $300 million. In 2027, OTC predicts it to be $310 million.
These notable increases indicate Purdy's contract will become relatively cheaper with each passing year. Case in point, his $53 million average will take up approximately 17.6 percent of the Niners' cap space in 2026, then only 17.1 percent the following year.
All one has to do is recall how the Kansas City Chiefs' then-whopping 10-year extension with quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemed insane when it was finalized in 2020.
Now, though, the annual average of $45 million per for Mahomes is a relative bargain, especially when it takes up just a shade over 16 percent of K.C.'s cap space.
That's how one has to view Purdy's extension.
In the next few years, up-and-coming quarterbacks like the Washington Commanders' Jayden Daniels and the Chicago Bears' Caleb Williams could end up seizing deals that pay them an average of $60-plus million per season.
By that point, Purdy's own deal will look like a steal.
