49ers find their kicking competition to push Jake Moody harder

_**The 49ers promised some competition for Jake Moody, and it'll come in the form of well-traveled journeyman Greg Joseph.**_

The San Francisco 49ers declared third-year kicker [Jake Moody wouldn't have a free pass](https://ninernoise.com/kyle-shanahan-confirms-jake-moody-won-t-have-a-free-pass-in-training-camp-01jqs08ehd0b) after [massive struggles](https://ninernoise.com/jake-moody-49ers-career-paralleling-biggest-kicker-bust-nfl-history-01jgw7q2x0cd) dogged him late in 2024.

Turns out, the Niners kept that declaration true.

Quietly tucked behind the blockbuster news of quarterback Brock Purdy's extension, another transaction was executed with agent Brett Kessler announcing San Francisco inked his client, veteran kicker Greg Joseph, to a one-year deal:

Joseph, 30 years old, first kicked in a regular-season game back in 2018 with the Cleveland Browns before spending time with the Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Washington Commanders and New York Jets.

Over his NFL career, the South African-born specialist has an 82.3 field-goal percentage while making 90.8 percent of his extra-point attempts.

The details of the contract will ultimately reveal just how much faith the Niners have in Moody, notably whether or not the guaranteed money (if any) is substantial enough to suggest Joseph has a real chance of making San Francisco's 53-man roster, thereby booting Moody from future use.

Either way, it's something the 49ers set out to do this offseason, although it was a bit of a surprise not to see someone brought aboard in the immediate aftermath of the NFL Draft.

With training camp not taking place until late July, though, the Niners instead opted to take their time identifying someone worthy of pushing Moody back into prominence.

As for Moody?

Well, he's been on notice for a while now, and the positive hope is Joseph can push him back in the right direction after San Francisco used a third-round draft pick on the former Michigan kicker back in 2023.
