The San Francisco 49ers have undergone some massive changes between a head-turning trade of their No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel and a major overhaul across the roster during free agency. San Francisco has committed to getting younger and cheaper starting with this offseason.
While they have found their young star quarterback to continue leading them forward, he will no longer be a cheap expense on the salary cap.
Brock Purdy and the Niners have agreed to a five-year, $265 million contract extension to keep him in the Bay Area, his agent Kyle Strongin tells NFL Media. Purdy's deal earns him $181 in guaranteed money with $160.5 coming in the first three new years of the deal.
Purdy's deal was priority No. 1 for San Francisco heading into the offseason and the two sides have gone back and forth in recent months to secure the agreement. Some slight questions had come forward about the team's willingness to commit to him, but this contract leaves no doubt about that.
But it does leave 1 question for fans ...
Can be again be a Super Bowl QB?
The three-year pro will carry the future of Niners' football through a modified rebuild at present. San Francisco let 11 starters walk in free agency and has overhauled their defense with Robert Saleh returning to the team with a crop of rookies ready to step in on that side.
Purdy started as a franchise surprise, rising from the 2022 draft's "Mr. Irrelevant" to a trusted starter. He broke out in his sophomore season with 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, leading the Niners to Super Bowl LVIII.
Following an overall regression in 2024, San Francisco hopes to reset things not only with their younger faces, but also securing their franchise centerpieces. Before they finalized Purdy's deal Friday afternoon, the team agreed to terms with tight end George Kittle on a four-year extension.
Purdy now becomes the face of the franchise for certain and counted on to produce consistently under Kyle Shanahan's tutelage, keeping the Niners in the thick of contention.
Or, at least that what fans hope is the answer to their 1 question.
