Potential Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback target reached out to teams before retirement

Former NFL and New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr had his representatives contact other teams to gauge their interest before his retirement.

Carr retired after suffering a shoulder injury that would need surgery, likely costing him the entire 2024 season. Instead of going through that surgery, Carr opted to retire and walk from the NFL after 11 seasons as a signal-caller.

However, Carr looked at his options outside New Orleans before restructuring his contract this March. The Pittsburgh Steelers were likely among those options.

“A Carr representative spoke with at least two teams in the market for a quarterback about potential interest in the veteran,” ESPN reported.

According to ESPN, Carr had never permission to speak with other teams. This offseason, that led to the sticky situation that Carr and the Saints found themselves in, but they appeared ready to charge ahead before the shoulder injury caused him to reconsider everything.

Now, only Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, Hunter Dekkers, and Jake Haener are on their roster. Where does that leave the Saints? It likely leaves them in a transitional year as they evaluate what they have in Shough and if any of the other options on their roster can be viable options for them. Otherwise, they will gear up for the 2026 class.
