Andre Onana coming out to catch the ball
Andre Onana's charge out at Tyrique George
Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp have questioned Andre Onana’s decision to charge out at Tyrique George during Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Referee Chris Kavanagh initially deemed it a foul and awarded a penalty. However, VAR official Craig Pawson intervened and sent Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor for a review.
After a brief review, Kavanagh overturned his decision, and a statement from the Premier League followed shortly after. "VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by Onana on George and recommended an on-field review – with Onana deemed to have played the ball," [the Premier League Match Centre wrote on X](https://twitter.com/PLMatchCentre/status/1923479530997461383?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 16, 2025 ). "The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."
Speaking about the decision, the United icon Keane, offered his view on the decision.
"If he had just knocked it a bit wider and fall into the goalkeeper, but, of course, he gets a touch on the ball and it's the right decision," he told Sky Sports. "But I think could have been a little bit smarter.
"If he had a bit more experience, I think he'd have knocked wide from him and he'd of made contact with the goalkeeper. He knows – there, look! He looks a bit guilty there, doesn't he?"
Meanwhile, the former Liverpool midfielder, Redknapp added: "It was difficult. He's not a striker. He's played all his career as a young academy player, as a wide player. All of sudden, he's playing against three experienced centre backs trying to run the line. It was a tough night for him.
"It wasn't ever going to be easy, but when you're making your full debut, you want to really play in your best position, but you don't care, you just want to be out there. But the other thing I would say about that one, I don't know what Onana's doing. What is he doing? Just stay in your goal!"
Keane then concluded: "I think a smarter player with a bit more experience would have knocked it a bit wider and fallen into the goalkeeper. He was a little bit lucky. He done that previously. We got to the right decision, but don't give him a chance. Mind your own business. Why is he coming out there? He just gets in touch, so he'll argue all day it's the right decision."
During Sky Sports' commentary, commentator Rob Hawthorne, said: "Put through here towards Tyrique George. Onana came a long way, did he catch him? He did. It's a penalty. Onana has given away a spot kick."
Meanwhile, Alan Smith then added: Just as we were talking about changing the centre-forward, the youngster, has he come good here or has he taken a fall?
"[Andre] Onana knows which it is. Certainly, George gets a little toe to it but after that... I think it's a dive. Maybe anticipating the contact. 'Keeper certainly gets something of the ball. I don't think this is going to stand, you know. I don't think this is going to stand."
