Reece James has insisted that Chelsea “belong in the Champions League” after their 1-0 win over Manchester United on Friday night. It was a result that pushed the Blues to fourth position in the Premier League table.
The winner entered in the 71st minute when James, who had been playing on the right, supplied the accurate cross that Cucurella headed beyond goalkeeper Andre Onana. James’s display was crucial throughout the match. He nearly scored the opener in the first half with a thumping shot that was denied by the post. His defensive effort and goal contribution were the key factors to the win.
Looking back at the match, James informed Sky Sports,
“The Champions League is where the club belongs, competing in the best competitions. People like to write us off and call us young, but it’s an experienced Manchester United team and we did what we needed to do to get the three points.
“We have been working the whole season. The messages have been clear from the start. Executing them has been hard, but this is what we do – day in, and day out.”
Chelsea Set Their Sights on Champions League Qualification
The victory was vital for Chelsea, particularly after Aston Villa’s 2-0 win over Tottenham. The Blues are now in the final stretch after getting past Manchester United. They know that a victory in their final game against Nottingham Forest will earn them top-five finish.
Enzo Maresca, who had Champions League qualification as one of his aims at the beginning of the season, saw his side turn out against the Red Devils and seal the win. It will also mean a return to the competition for the top European club sides.
Manchester United, however, are a lowly 16th, and all they have to hold on to is next month’s Europa League final with Spurs. Winning that will give the Red Devils a spot in next season’s Champions League campaign.
