Ian Wright hints at career change as Arsenal icon drops big FA Cup final update

Arsenal and Crystal Palace icon Ian Wright has hinted that Saturday's FA Cup final could be his last in a surprise update. Wright was a part of the ITV Sport coverage that saw Oliver Glasner's side create history for the Selhurst Park club.

Eberechi Eze etched his name in Eagles folklore after his first-half goal was eno ugh to earn Palace a shock win over Manchester City. The 61-year-old was in attendance to witness the euphoric scenes from the Palace supporters at one side of Wembley and teased that he could be coming to be stepping down from the panel - where he also features for ITV's England coverage.

Wright dropped the surprise comment during their post-match reaction after describing what the triumph would mean for those figures in Palace's history that failed to win silverware at the club.

In doing so, he dropped a clear hint that his time covering the FA Cup for ITV will come to an end.

"Now that he [Steve Coppell] can see these scenes, he could've seen what it'd be like because we made some noise here in 1990," he said.

"What it makes you realise if you could've given them that, I'm glad that I was able to be here - probably my last ever FA Cup and Palace have won it - do you know what I mean?

"It's like a dream."

Roy Keane couldn't resist a swipe back at his old friend after the comment, he replied: "They done it for you Ian."

"And more work for Ian, more TV work for him," the Irishman added, after Palace's route into the Europa League was sealed.

"There must be a deal out there for him somewhere."

It would be the latest surprise move for terrestrial television coverage in the United Kingdom after Gary Lineker's landmark exit from BBC's flagship programme Match of the Day.

But Saturday's win for Palace was extra special for Wright after witnessing one of his former clubs upset the applecart and inflict a second successive FA Cup final defeat for Pep Guardiola.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson put in a superb performance, denying Omar Marmoush from the penalty spot in the first-half and making a further five saves in their 1-0 win.

Though the encounter wasn't without its controversy, as Henderson avoided retrospective action for seemingly handling the ball outside the box.

Erling Haaland burst through on goal looking to latch onto the bouncing through ball but the 28-year-old swatted the ball away, appearing to do so outside the box.

Had the former Manchester United goalkeeper been found to have handled outside the 18-yard box, it would have been a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

However, the video assistant referee remained with the onfield decision and it was deemed that the direction in which Haaland was going made it a possible but not an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

The incident occurred during the first-half and a red card would have put the encounter on its head but Henderson remained between the stick, helping keep City at bay with some important stops.

Wright, however, pulled no punches during their half-time assessment of the issue. He said: "Wow. I was petrified for him because how they can say this isn't denying a goalscoring opportunity is absolutely pathetic.

"It's crazy, he's going to tap it past him and into the goal.

"It's rubbish [the angle in which Haaland is going isn't a goalscoring opportunity], what are you talking about? Erling Haaland going through, the goalkeeper isn't meant to be batting it away, why are they making up these rules so eloquently to confuse us?

"That's supposed to be a sending off."
