They say you can never have enough talent at any one position in the NFL. While that is true in some ways, it’s also not. If you have too many players you believe can start, you’re likely doing a disservice to them and your football team by keeping them all. Under current rules, the typical course of action in such a scenario would be to trade the one who is the most expensive or about to become the most expensive. It feels like the Chicago Bears are inching towards that scenario with Tyrique Stevenson.
Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic spoke on [Hoge & Jahns](https://x.com/hogeandjahns/status/1922728243750138176?s=66&t=WLyO-jOYOSN5fbyUeNpSMA) about the situation. The Bears seem high on new arrival Zah Frazier, their 5th round pick from the draft. Together with Stevenson and Terell Smith, that leaves the team with a logjam at the third cornerback spot alongside Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. If all three play well in training camp, there is a possibility one of them could be traded. With his looming contract situation and noted history of mental lapses, Stevenson might be the odd man out.
Last season was a major disappointment for him. Not only did his productivity take a dip, but he was actively responsible for some of the Bears’ key losses. None were more visual than the Hail Mary fiasco in Washington, where he was caught on camera with his back to the play, jawing at fans. That is the kind of immaturity this new coaching staff won’t accept, especially under defensive backs coach Al Harris. Tyrique Stevenson is a talented young man. He has the capacity to become a Pro Bowl cornerback. It all depends on whether he ever learns the necessary discipline for the position. The next three months will decide so much about his future.
