There is no denying Chelsea's biggest problem this season. The Blues, for the most part of the season, have performed well under Enzo Maresca and find themselves in fourth-place with one game to go.
An impressive season with context, if they are able to finish in the Champions League places, but with a bit more composure and deadliness in front of goal, they could be even higher. Only Liverpool - the newly-crowned champions of England - have created more chances (143) than the Blues (117) this season in the Premier League. Likewise, the Reds are the only team to have missed more big chances (87) than Chelsea (81).
Liverpool have scored 83 goals, exactly 20 more than Chelsea's total (63). It goes to show what having clinical finishers does for a team - which, of course, sounds obvious, but is in an area the west Londoners are looking to address in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Nicolas Jackson is very highly rated at the club but there is an acceptance that they need to offer the striker more support and competition in the summer. Jackson has missed 19 big chances this season, the fourth most in the Premier League. Ollie Watkins, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland are the only players to have missed more big chances than Jackson, but those three all have a considerably better goal return this term.
At times this season, Maresca has bemoaned his team's lack of end product when the chances have been created. The wingers have all chipped in with goals, but not enough. In all competitions this season, Noni Madueke has scored the most out of all the wingers at the club with 11 goals, while Pedro Neto has six, Jadon Sancho is on four and Tyrique George has added two.
It is why Chelsea are also looking at bringing a new left-sided winger in over the summer transfer window. Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens are both options for the Blues but neither have set the world alight in the goal department this season. Garnacho has scored 11 times in all competitions for Manchester United, while Dortmund's Gittens has 12 goals to his name this term.
Cole Palmer of course has not been himself in front of goal in the second half of the season - something that has been well documented. Although you feel as if it is just a matter of time before something clicks and Palmer is back to his free-scoring self once again.
Whatever happens, Chelsea need to address their failure in front of goal in the summer transfer window. Whether that is signing Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen, or someone else; the Blues need to get this right.
