Starting XI

Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Eddie Howe in training

It's a huge game in the race for a Champions League spot. Second-placed Arsenal vs third-placed Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners sit two points above Eddie Howe's men, who in turn are level on points with Chelsea and Aston Villa after their Friday night victories. It's that close.

Both teams head into the game with significant injury concerns. For Arsenal, Declan Rice remains a doubt. For Newcastle, Kieran Trippier will miss out while Sven Botman looks unlikely to feature after a scan on his ongoing knee issue. Joe Willock is also a doubt, while the likes of Lewis Hall and Matt Targett remain in the treatment table.

In many ways, it makes picking a starting XI even easier for Howe, with a lack of options. In other ways, it's so difficult as he has to get it right from the start. Back four or back five? Lewis Miley in midfield or gamble on Willock's fitness? And does Anthony Gordon start or will Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy retain their spots?

Plenty of decisions to make. Our team of NUFC writers take a look at the starting XI possibilities.

Newcastle United could do without a late season injury crisis but here they are and it's one they have no choice but to overcome. The Sven Botman situation seems unclear and one that Newcastle dare not get wrong.

It's why I think Howe might opt to play it safer and go with Emil Krafth again and play with a back five against the Gunners. A solid defensive rearguard at the Emirates Stadium is not the worst idea and one I'd go with.

It also gives Howe the opportunity to get Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy in the team together. Murphy and Livramento give you so much going forward and can also defend.

The other choice is to go with Jamaal Lascelles but he is still getting back to fitness so that would be deemed another risk.

Starting XI: Pope, Krafth, Schar, Burn; Murphy, Tonali, Bruno, Livramento; Barnes, Isak, Gordon

Even if Sven Botman does not make it, I'd be tempted to stick with a back three for this one. Although this side can line up in a 4-3-3 with their eyes closed, I would be wary of making multiple personnel changes on top of a change of system given how light Newcastle United are at the moment.

I'd just make the one tweak, as a result, and start Emil Krafth at right-sided centre-back. The Sweden international slotted in when he came on against Chelsea and can give Jacob Murphy some invaluable defensive cover.

The lack of options at the centre of Eddie Howe's defence - presuming Sven Botman isn't passed fit - likely makes the gaffer's decision a tad easier. As such, I'd be a little surprised if he goes for five at the back once again.

That system has worked at the Emirates Stadium already this season but I much prefer Jacob Murphy higher up the pitch at right-wing as opposed to playing the wing-back role. For that reason, I'd bring Emil Krafth in on the right of a four-man defence.

Lewis Miley comes in for Joe Willock, I'd go for Anthony Gordon over Harvey Barnes and the rest of Howe's team picks itself as injuries continue to bite...

This isn't the time to gamble on formations or on the fitness of players. Sven Botman and Joe Willock can't start at the Emirates, and Jacob Murphy can't play as a wing-back. Arsenal are strong down both flanks - Bukayo Saka and Ben White on the right and Gabriel Martinelli and Myles Lewis-Skelly on the left - so it has to be a 4-3-3 formation for me.

Emil Krafth is third choice right back for a reason but he hasn't let Newcastle down in a long time, so I'd select him in a back four, with Lewis Miley getting the nod over Willock or Sean Longstaff. The teenager is a proper player who will thrive on this stage and help give added control in the midfield.

That just leaves the wide positions - and Anthony Gordon has to start. I'd be tempted to leave Murphy out despite his great form but he will provide Krafth with better defensive cover, so unfortunately for Harvey Barnes he is the odd man out.

Starting XI: Pope; Krafth, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimares, Miley; Murphy, Gordon, Isak.

If Sven Botman is not fit, then Newcastle must revert back to a back four, and that means Emil Krafth coming in at right-back. They could keep the same formation they used at Chelsea with Krafth part of a back three, but with Arsenal dangerous on the flanks, I would rather not ask Jacob Murphy to play wing-back.

Lewis Miley is ready to start in midfield, while I would keep Anthony Gordon in the side, with Harvey Barnes the unlucky man to miss out. Gordon and Alexander Isak have terrified Arsenal three times already this season - and can make it four given the chance.

Starting XI: Pope; Krafth, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimares, Miley; Murphy, Gordon, Isak.
