Declan Rice of Arsenal is challenged by Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schaer of Newcastle United
Newcastle United blew the chance to finish second after wasting a string of presentable opportunities at the Emirates Stadium and then hit self-destruct.
The Magpies were denied by the class of David Raya on numerous occasions in the first half with Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes all forcing the home stopper into action. Newcastle slipped behind after Anthony Gordon lost the ball in the final third before Bukayo Saka slipped it to Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice swept home to put the home side ahead.
Here's how the Magpies rated in the capital:
Nick Pope 6
A couple of key saves but didn't get a sniff or Rice goal.
Fabian Schar 7
A dominant display as he reached double figures with clearances.
Sven Botman 7
Defensively solid but not close to full fitness. A surprise starter yes, but nobody taken aback by his withdrawal just after the hour.
Dan Burn 7
Another sturdy display and could have netted in the first half.
Jacob Murphy 6
Worked hard but didn't manage an accurate cross offensively. Made four tackles, underlining his defensive presence.
Sandro Tonali 7
Hard to fault the Italy star after an afternoon of probing. Others weren't on his wavelength.
Bruno Guimaraes 7
Snapped into tackles but will rue first half opportunity he guided straight at Raya.
Tino Livramento 8
One of Newcastle's brighter stars on the day. A good chance to score in the first half.
Harvey Barnes 5
Blazed over a great chance as the game petered out.
Anthony Gordon 4
A horror moment as he dilly-dallied in his own half and lost the ball to hand Arsenal a goal. Offered very little in response during key game.
Callum Wilson 4
Held the ball up OK to begin with, but 17 touches and no shots.
