Gary Neville says Newcastle United player will be 'disappointed' with his performance vs Arsenal

Newcastle United could not find a way past Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya on Sunday.

The Magpies fell to a disappointing defeat at the Emirates Stadium, as they missed out on the chance to effectively qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle lost 1-0 to Arsenal, with Declan Rice scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.

Eddie Howe’s side had plenty of chances, but came up against an inspired David Raya. He made some spectacular saves in the first half, denying the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

It might have been a different story had Alexander Isak been available.

The Magpies’ top scorer missed the game against Arsenal with a groin problem, as Callum Wilson started up front.

Gary Neville’s verdict on Callum Wilson vs Arsenal

It was Wilson’s second Premier League start of the campaign, with his other coming away to Liverpool.

The 33-year-old endured a frustrating afternoon, with Howe opting to replace him with Will Osula in the 64th minute.

Wilson failed to fill Isak’s shoes, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville far from impressed with the £20million forward.

Moments after Wilson was substituted, Neville said on commentary for Sky Sports Premier League: “He will be disappointed, Callum Wilson.”

He certainly will be disappointed. Wilson has not scored a single Premier League goal this season, with his only strike coming in the FA Cup.

Callum Wilson could only have one Newcastle United game left

Newcastle United face Everton at St James’ Park in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday 25th May.

It could be Wilson’s final chance to play for Newcastle United, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

It remains to be seen if the number nine will be retained. It currently feels unlikely, and his performance against Arsenal will not have helped his bid to win a new deal.

If Wilson does leave the club, he could still have the chance to remain in the Premier League. It has been reported that Leeds United want Wilson, as they get set to return to the top flight of English football.
