Macario emotional after goal helps seal FA Cup win

Catarina Macario was visibly emotional after her goal helped Chelsea seal a Women's FA Cup title on Sunday.

The U.S. women's national team forward came on as a second-half substitute and headed home an 84th-minute free kick to give Chelsea a two-goal lead over Manchester United.

Sandy Baltimore would complete her brace in second-half stoppage time to provide the final margin of victory at Wembley Stadium, as Chelsea clinched a domestic treble on the campaign.

For Macario, the goal represented another major milestone following a long period of injury problems. The 25-year-old was emotional on the pitch after the game as she celebrated with her teammates.

The attacker suffered a torn ACL in June 2022, an injury that forced her to miss both the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics after she suffered a setback.

Macario started the 2024-25 season slowly, making just two appearances off the bench in the first two months of the season.

Eventually Macario fully integrated into Sonia Bompastor's squad, finishing the season with 10 goals in all competitions.

“It is a very emotional day, one that we always wanted to win. We wanted to come back here," Macario said after the game.

“We just won a treble, and it has been a very hard season for us, for me personally. But this is a very special day.

“I think it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at Wembley and to score brings a lot of emotions for sure. It is the cherry on the cake for the end of the season."
