Declan Rice admits Arsenal were 'poor' this season amid failed title hopes

Arsenal held off a motivated Newcastle United side to earn a 1-0 victory on Sunday, virtually guaranteeing the Gunners another second place finish in the Premier League this season.

The North London side will end the campaign without a trophy as they were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain and failed to advance to the final of the FA Cup or Carabao Cup.

It's a scenario that Declan Rice called "difficult" after Sunday's victory, in which the Arsenal and England midfielder scored the lone goal.

"After coming so close in the league last year, we were poor this year by our standards," Rice told Sky Sports. "To go out of every cup competition - with the players and the manager we've got - we need to be competing for titles and trophies, we can't take anything for granted.

"We're probably going to lose a few players so we need to sign more players. We'll strengthen over the summer.

"We're going to come back more hungry and stronger wanting to win something for this club."

Rice believes his side have the ability to win in all the competitions they are in, and he pointed to the Gunners' performance against Newcastle on Sunday as one that needs to be replicated more often if they are to ultimately reach their goals.

"We have to be at the level every week, we had such a good chance in the Champions League we had momentum with that and the league slipped away a few weeks ago," he said. "Today to win was massive and Newcastle are such a good side."
