Steelers Former Top Pick Labeled 'Best Player Who Could Get Cut'

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on a decision from veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers on whether he'll suit up for the black and gold next season.

But while the offense continues to be molded, the defense is also hoping to take shape for 2025.

The Steelers drafted defensive tackle Derrick Harmon from Oregon with their first-round pick this year, and he's expected to make an immediate impact along the defensive line.

Defensive end Jack Sawyer will also play in Pittsburgh after the Steelers called his name in the fourth round, along with tackle Yahya Black from Iowa in the fifth round.

With several new additions, there could be an odd man out along the defensive line, and Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox thinks that could be former third-round pick DeMarvin Leal.

Pittsburgh Steelers: DL DeMarvin Leal

"Steelers 2022 third-round pick DeMarvin Leal has shown flashes for the Steelers, but he's never emerged as a starter and missed most of last season with a neck injury," Knox wrote. "After Pittsburgh re-signed Isaiahh Loudermilk and used a first-round pick on Derrick Harmon, it may consider dumping Leal and the final year of his rookie contract. Doing so would save $1.4 million in 2025 cap space."

Coach Mike Tomlin said before the draft that Pittsburgh had an "extreme urgency" to address the defensive line, and they did just that. There's a chance that because of his salary camp implications, Leal could be the odd man out.
