The Green Bay Packers boast one of the youngest homegrown collections of wide receivers across the NFL, which just got a bit deeper and perhaps more explosive after selecting Matthew Golden in the first round of April’s 2025 NFL Draft.
“That pick was all about adding speed,” a rival NFC Executive tells me, of the Packers taking Golden. “Green Bay’s about to go vertical.”
Green Bay is betting big that Golden’s 4.29 speed and 17 yards per reception average at the University of Texas make Jordan Love and the Packers’ vertical passing attack even more prolific, a year removed from leading the league in explosive plays.
However, Golden’s arrival could spell the end of one of the Packers’ other young pass catchers’ time in Green Bay.
Could the Green Bay Packers Release Romeo Doubs?
Bleacher Report’s Krisopher Knox put together a list of the best player on every team who could be cut before the 2025 NFL season kicks off, including the Packers moving on from wideout Romeo Doubs.
“The Green Bay Packers are highly likely to part with one of their young veteran receivers,” Knox writes for B/R. “After using two of their first three draft selections on Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, who are both entering a contract year, are the two most logical candidates.
“And while one could argue that Doubs has been the more reliable of the two, he’s also set to carry the bigger 2025 cap hit. Watson is coming off a torn ACL and could spend the season on injured reserve anyway, and Green Bay could save $3.4 million in cap space by cutting Doubs.”

Doubling down on Golden and Williams doesn’t necessarily bode well for Doubs, who caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games last season.
However, at 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, Doubs has the ability to be a red-zone target and possession receiver type for Love, who posted a 99.8 passer rating when targeting him.
While Doubs undoubtedly took a step back in 2024, as the rest of the receiving corps did as a whole, and $3.4 million in cap space could be well spent on adding a pass rusher or filling other needs, he also might be in the mix to start the season atop the Packers’ depth chart at receiver.
How quickly Golden and Williams show they are capable of being productive and the kind of springs and summers the likes of Reed and Wicks have could well determine Doubs’ fate and future in Green Bay.
